In India, there are 28 states and 8 union territories.

The President administers Union Territories through an administrator appointed by him/her. The Governor, as the representative of the President, is the head of the State Executive.

Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh wef 31 October 2019.

The two union territories- Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu- were merged in January 2020.
