The structures of beryllium chloride in solid state and vapour phase, are :
A. Chain and dimer, respectively
B. Linear in both
C. Dimer and Linear, respectively
D. Chain in both
Solution: A
Structure of Beryllium Chloride in solid state: In solid state, BeCl2 combines with another BeCl2 to give Be2Cl4 by forming a coordinate bond and forms chain like structure.
Structure of Beryllium Chloride in vapour state: In vapour state, BeCl2 exists as a single molecule having a linear structure Cl-Be-Cl and a bridged dimer.
Hence, option (A) is correct.
